Spark plugs, brake fluid and coolant: when do they really need replacing?
Updated 13 October 2026 · CarsPlusBikes
Every car has a handful of items that are not touched at most services but come due every few years: spark plugs, brake fluid and engine coolant are the big three. They are the reason a car that normally needs a quick oil change suddenly has a much larger bill at year four or year eight. Knowing when they are due, and why, helps you budget and spot unnecessary work.
Spark plugs: turbo engines need them sooner
Modern spark plugs last a long time, but how long depends heavily on the engine. Across the Kia and Hyundai ranges the pattern is very consistent:
| Engine type | Typical interval (USA schedules) | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Turbocharged petrol (T-GDi) | Every 48,000 miles (78,000 km) | Kia K4 1.6T, Seltos 1.6T, Telluride 2.5T, Sonata 2.5T, Santa Fe 2.5T |
| Naturally aspirated petrol | Every 96,000 miles (156,000 km) | Kia K4 2.0, Seltos 2.0, Carnival 3.5, Kona 2.0, Tucson 2.5, Palisade |
| Electric | None | No spark plugs |
Turbo engines run higher cylinder pressures and temperatures, which wears the plug electrodes faster. That is why, on the same model, the turbo version has its plugs changed at half the distance of the non-turbo version. If you are choosing between engines and plan to keep the car for a long time, this is a real cost difference.
Honda handles plugs through the Maintenance Minder: sub-code 4 calls for new spark plugs when the car's use makes them due. In India, schedules are usually shorter. On a Creta 1.5 turbo-petrol, for example, the spark plugs are replaced at the 80,000 km service.
Brake fluid: a time-based item
Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air over time, whatever the car's mileage. Water in the fluid lowers its boiling point and can corrode the brake system from the inside. That is why brake fluid has a time limit as well as a distance limit:
- Kia and Hyundai (USA): inspect at every visit, replace every 48,000 miles or 48 months.
- Honda: sub-code 7 on the Maintenance Minder; if it has not appeared within 3 years, change the fluid anyway.
- India: brake fluid typically appears on the 30,000 km and 60,000 km bills on a Hyundai Creta, and on the 36-month bill on a Kia Seltos.
- Hyundai Canada: replaced at 36 months on current gas models.
For a car that does little mileage, brake fluid is often the first long-interval item that comes due, simply because of age.
Engine coolant: very long life, then shorter
Modern long-life coolants last far longer than the old green antifreeze. Kia and Hyundai's US schedules show a two-stage rule:
- First replacement: at 120,000 miles (about 195,000–200,000 km) or 120 months.
- After that: every 24,000 miles (about 39,000–40,000 km) or 24 months.
In other words, a ten-year-old car switches to a much shorter coolant interval. Hybrids add a second coolant circuit for the inverter, and on some plug-in hybrids that one has its own, shorter interval: on the Kia Sportage and Sorento plug-in hybrids it is every 32,000 miles or 36 months. Electric cars have coolant too, for the battery and motor, on the same 120-month first interval.
Indian schedules are again different: on a Hyundai Creta, coolant appears on the 50,000 km, 70,000 km and 90,000 km bills. Always follow the schedule for the country your car was sold in.
Why these items create the big services
Most services are an oil change plus inspections. The expensive ones are the visits where several long-interval items line up. A few examples from our data:
- Kia and Hyundai, year 4: brake fluid due, often together with the cabin and engine air filters.
- Turbo Kias and Hyundais, year 6: spark plugs due at 48,000 miles.
- VW Taigun / Virtus automatic in India, 60,000 km: gearbox oil change, taking the bill to about ₹22,900 before GST, against about ₹11,900 for the manual.
- Year 10: the first coolant replacement on most Kia and Hyundai models.
Signs you should not wait for the schedule
- Spark plugs: rough idle, misfires, hesitation under acceleration, a check-engine light or worse fuel economy.
- Brake fluid: a soft or spongy pedal, a pedal that sinks, or the brake warning light. Have it checked immediately.
- Coolant: the temperature gauge climbing, a sweet smell, puddles under the car, or the level dropping in the reservoir between services.

Our schedule pages show exactly when each of these items is due for every model, year by year: Kia USA, Hyundai USA, Honda USA, Kia Canada and Hyundai Canada. For India, the Volkswagen, Kia and Hyundai calculators show the parts and prices on each bill. Tap a row to spotlight one item across all years.
