Hyundai maintenance in Canada vs the USA: why Canadian Hyundais are serviced every 6 months
Updated 13 October 2026 · CarsPlusBikes
If you own a Hyundai in Canada and have ever read an American forum post about service intervals, you may have been confused: the advice does not match what your dealer tells you. That is because Hyundai uses a separate maintenance schedule for Canada. The cars are largely the same, but the schedule is built around Canadian conditions, and the differences are bigger than a simple switch from miles to kilometres.
The headline difference: twice as many visits
| United States | Canada | |
|---|---|---|
| Gas and hybrid models | Every 8,000 miles (13,000 km) or 12 months | Every 8,000 km or 6 months |
| Electric models (Ioniq, Kona Electric) | Every 8,000 miles (13,000 km) or 12 months | Every 12,000 km or 12 months |
| Separate severe-driving schedule | Yes | No separate table |
Most current models. A few models and model years differ; check your model on the schedule pages.
For a gas or hybrid Hyundai, the Canadian schedule asks for an engine oil and filter change every 8,000 km or 6 months. The US schedule allows 13,000 km or 12 months under normal driving, and only drops to 8,000 km or 6 months under severe driving, which includes very cold weather and salted roads. In effect, the Canadian schedule treats every Canadian driver as a severe-use driver, which matches the reality of long winters, short cold trips and road salt.
More job types in the Canadian tables
The US tables use two letters: R for replace and I for inspect. The Canadian tables use five:
- R – Replace: the part or fluid is renewed at that visit.
- I – Inspect: checked and adjusted, cleaned or replaced only if needed.
- S – Service: the item is actively serviced, for example the brakes are cleaned and adjusted rather than just looked at.
- L – Lubricate: latches, hinges and locks are lubricated, which matters in freezing weather.
- A – Add: a bottle of fuel injector cleaner is added if TOP TIER detergent gasoline is not available.
On a 2026 Santa Fe, for example, the brakes are inspected at the first annual visit and serviced at the second, alternating every year, and all latches, hinges and locks are lubricated at almost every visit. Those are jobs that do not appear as separate lines in the US table at all.
Item by item: 2026 Santa Fe (gas)
| Item | United States | Canada |
|---|---|---|
| Engine oil and filter | Every 13,000 km / 12 months (8,000 km / 6 months if severe) | Every 8,000 km / 6 months |
| Cabin (climate control) air filter | Every 2nd visit (about every 2 years) | Every 12 months |
| Engine air filter | Replace every 3rd visit | Replace every 2 years, inspect in between |
| Brake fluid | Replace every 78,000 km / 48 months | Replace at 36 months |
| Spark plugs (2.5 turbo) | Every 78,000 km | Every 72,000 km |
| Automatic transmission fluid | No service under normal use; every 100,000 km under severe use | Replace every 96,000 km |
| Engine coolant | First at 200,000 km or 120 months | First at 192,000 km or 120 months |
Distances for the US are shown in kilometres for easy comparison.
The pattern is consistent: Canada replaces fluids and filters sooner, and turns several "only if severe" US items into normal scheduled work. The automatic transmission fluid is the clearest case. In the US it needs no service at all under normal driving; in Canada it is replaced at 96,000 km.
What this means for the cost of owning a Hyundai in Canada
- More visits per year. At 16,000 km a year a gas Hyundai in Canada needs two services a year, versus about 1.2 in the US.
- More oil changes over the life of the car. Oil and filter are the core of every visit, so this is where most of the extra cost comes from.
- Fewer surprises later. Fluids such as brake fluid and transmission fluid are renewed earlier, which can help reliability and resale in a harsh climate.
- EVs are different. Electric Hyundais in Canada have one visit a year (12,000 km or 12 months), focused on brakes, cabin filter, coolant checks and battery checks. There is no oil to change.
Should a Canadian owner follow the US schedule instead?
No. The schedule that applies to your car is the one for the country where it was sold, and it is the one your local dealer will follow. Even if your driving feels gentle, Canadian winters, cold starts and road salt are exactly the conditions the US schedule calls severe. If you imported a US-market Hyundai, ask a Canadian dealer which schedule they will hold you to before you skip any visits.
Is Kia Canada the same?
Kia, Hyundai's sister brand, keeps the same schedule in both countries: one visit every 13,000 km (8,000 miles) or 12 months, with the oil change moving to every 8,000 km or 6 months under severe driving such as cold weather or salted roads. You can see every Kia service in our Kia Canada schedule.
See your own model
Open the Hyundai Canada schedule, pick your model and engine, and use the United States / Canada switch at the top to compare both countries for the same car. The table shows every visit, what is replaced, serviced, lubricated or inspected, and lets you tap any visit for a full checklist to take to your dealer.
